Yankee Stadium

Wednesday. May 27
Day 50
It is hard to believe we have been on the road for 50 days! After breakfast and saying goodbye, we set off to New Rochelle to meet up with Bob and Barb that we met on a trip in January. I wonder if when they told us to come and visit them if they really thought we would! They are so gracious to host us in their beautiful home. After arrival, moving our bags in and meeting their 3 beautiful and the best behaved dogs we have ever met, we set off to Yankee Stadium. Bob drove and parked and there we were! What a magnificent stadium!

We walked around and then Bob took us to Monument Park where we got to see the retired numbers (there is only one single number not retired but that will be soon as it was worn by Derek Jeter) and many plaques and statues.

There is not any place we have been that is like this with the history and amazing players and teams that have been Yankees. They have the most World Series Championships, at 27. It would be easy to hate the Yankees just because they win all the time, but after being here, I think it would be a better idea just to cheer for them instead. We sat in the right field bleachers and were “bleacher bums”. When the Yankee players take the field, the bleacher bums yell the name of each player in order starting with left field. The player then must acknowledge them with a tip of the hat or their own unique sign. Until acknowledged, they keep yelling.

It was really fun to watch. It was an afternoon game and very hot in the bleachers.  After the 5th inning, they told us to watch the screen as they “do something kind of fun” on the screen. To our amazement, the announcer said as we saw on the screen, “Welcome to the cathedral” Jack and Jodi Petrinovich”! We were speechless. Bob had arranged for this for us with the Yankees. What a thoughtful and amazing gift! We watched the Yankees defeat Kansas City in Yankee style. After returning back to their house, we settled in and then went to dinner at a great restaurant. I had shrimp and grits and Jack had fried chicken. More great conversation and then to bed to get ready for our big day in the city.
The NY emblem was designed by the Tiffany company and was originally struck on a medal of honor
for a fallen police officer killed in the line of duty in 1839.  Later in 1909 it was adopted by
the New York Highlanders who became the  NY Yankees.
