First Day in New Orleans

Tuesday, September 4, 2012
Had a lovely breakfast with the Merrill’s.  They are so kind to let us keep a bunch of our camping stuff in their tea room so we didn’t have to risk getting broken into in New Orleans.  We went back to downtown Baton Rouge and went to the Old Capitol Museum where they had a lot more info on Louisiana history and more of the Huey Long story.  Very interesting.

Baton Rouge waterfront- USS Kidd

Walked around  the waterfront and then headed to New Orleans and checked into Prytania Hotel just into the Garden District.  Our room was not ready so we parked and walked into the French Quarter, about a mile away.

Jackson Square

Luckily we had researched the area so took a walking tour, explored and then went back and took a nap.  This weather is absolutely killer and plus we wanted to stay up past 10.  The city was kind of dead, I am assuming from Isaac.  After our nap we drove, to an Uptown restaurant, Jacques Imo and split a dinner of crayfish etouffee.  Excellent.  Intended to go listen to music at the Maple Leaf Bar down the street but nothing happening so we went back to the hotel and parked and walked downtown again.  Tried to fine the 2 sites of Irvin Mayfield Jazz clubs.  Both are not open.  Also tried a Cajun restaurant with live music but no one there.  Ended up on Bourbon Street and the Maison Bourbon and listened to some jazz and then walked up and down Bourbon with all the crazies and saw mounted police on the biggest horses I have ever seen that were not Clydesdales.
