Tohono Chul Garden

Monday, October 15, 2012
Off to Tohono Chul Gardens today, I have wanted to go there both times we were here but we never got around to it as there is so much to see and do here.  We purchased the Tucson Fun Book which previously was the Passport book which is a great idea for locals or visitors as they have many 2 for 1 coupons.  If you go to a couple of the attractions you get your money’s worth and then you can leave it for a local.  We got to the gardens just in time to go on a docent led walk of the gardens.  She pointed out many plants and butterflies.  We got to see more devil’s claws and okra pods and then lots of cactus, mesquite plants and various trees.  There was an organ pipes cactus that I don’t think we have ever seen as it is more local to Mexico, although there is Organ Pipes National Park in southern Arizona.  We saw many hummingbirds and an amazing number of butterflies.  It is so strange to have many things blooming still.

We had a nice late breakfast in the tearoom and then drove down to 4th Avenue to find a Halloween costume.  What a joke, all that area is torn up as they are putting in a streetcar that will go for several miles.  We feel sorry for all the businesses trying to survive when the street is closed.  We had to loop around several times before we finally found it as so many roads were closed, including getting caught on a freeway we had no intention of getting on.  So frustrating.  Luckily we found costumes.  They are a tag team type costume.  Kind of crazy to buy them as we are not even going to a Halloween Party, just taking Jackson to his party at school!  Crazy grandparents!  Stopped at Zendaya’s and shared a burrito and then got tamales from the Tucson Tamale shop to bring home for dinner.  Yummy!  Finally, a good tamale.  We got a selection but only ate one each.
