Crazy Horse Monument and Custer State Park

July 21, 2012 Day 16
Got up and drove to the Crazy Horse Monument, 40 miles south.  It was way cooler than we thought it would be, the 4 Presidents of Mount Rushmore would fit in part of his head.  It is enormous, taller than the Washington Monument.

One of the Indian Lakota chiefs asked a polish immigrant, Korczak Ziolkowski, to carve the monument after he saw his New York Worlds fair’s prize winning sculpture. Dimensions 641 feet long and 563 feet high.  It is far from completion due to refusal to accept government money, it is totally privately funded.  His wife and 7 of his 10 children are carrying it on.  Saw interesting Indian Museum and more stories from Native American prospective on the Battle of the Little Bighorn.  Very cool after being there yesterday.
Drove on to Custer Park State Park and drove the wildlife loop first.  Saw pronghorn antelope, bison, tame mules that stick their head in your car.  We fed them apple core and carrots.  Funny little beggars.  Then went to Center Lake for a swim, felt great.  Then proceeded over the Needle Highway to Sylvan Lake.  Very cool, hard to describe all the pillars of stone.  Wonder how they were formed.

Arrived at Sylvan Lake by hiking ½ mile trail to the lake, and then hiked the mile around the lake which is actually dammed.  Rock climbers and kids jumping off rocks to lake.  Set up for a wedding, saw the bride and family.  Lots of families enjoying the scenery and weather. Hiked back to the car and Jodi made an interesting discovery when headed for the bathroom.  Watch for tomorrow's blog..... Jodi's most embarrassing moment - you will love it!
