Coor's Field, Home of the Colorado Rockies, Ballpark 29

Day 95

After a great breakfast of homemade waffles and scrambled eggs we set out for a day in Denver. Denver is a bout an hour and 15 minutes north of Colorado Springs. Paul and Kris were able to get us amazing tickets for the game, the best of all time, let alone this road trip. What a great way to see the last ballpark before returning home to Safeco. A huge thank you!!! We parked in Denver and had a nice lunch at the Wyncoop Brewery. I had a watermelon and asparagus salad, something new and delicious. Denver is really a beautiful city but we will not have time to do it justice on this trip. We walked over to Coor's Field past the Union Station.

We entered the ballpark and walked around the first level concourse looking for photo ops. We saw a few new food choices including fruit shish- cabobs and Rocky Mountain Oysters.

The fruit looked good but I wouldn't recommend the second. The are deep fried bull testicles! Yuck!!! Coor's Field is known for it's thin air and being a hitters paradise and a pitcher's nemesis. In the stadium seats are all green except for a row of purple seats which indicate the true “mile high” level. Luckily, we were not sitting there today, but it is cool to see.

Notice the purple "Mile High" line of seats

It was armed forces day and therefore we were in for a special treat because there were 6 parachuters who jumped today and landed in center field from the USAF Wings of Blue Parachute Team.. It was so exciting to see. I wonder how many jumps they have before they can actually land where they want to. Many of them landed standing upright and ran a few steps on the ground, really amazing and fun to watch. Each had a different flag, representing the service academies, POW's and MIA's and the last one represented the Rockies, who was a cadet from the US Air Force Academy.

The pink on the ground was the target.  Not bad!
A military choir sang the Star-Spangled Banner and servicemen unfolded a gigantic flag on the field before the game. It was a really hot day, 87 degrees at the start of the game. We sat 6 rows up right behind home plate. No doubt this is a once in a lifetime experience for us. It was amazing to actually hear the crack of the bat.
Close to the action

Paul, Kris and you know who!

The Colorado Rockies were hosting the Atlanta Braves. It started off with a bang with 2 run homerun by the Rockies in the bottom of the first and then solo homeruns by the Braves in the top of second and third. We thought the game might live up to the high scoring reputation Colorado has, however, the score was remained tied into the bottom of the 9th when the Rockies won in dramatic fashion with a walk off single. We also unfortunately saw the Braves relief pitcher, Jason Grilli, rupture his Achilles tendon while attempting to cover first base on a grounder to first. Then we got to see ex-Mariner pitcher David Aardsma come in for the Braves and give up the walk-off single.

We have now seen the last 12 home teams victorious! On to Safeco for Number 30. Can the trend possibly continue?
