Texas bound

Wednesday, September 12, 2012
Went out for breakfast with Marcel and  Cheryl to have beignets and coffee.  Jack had an omelet.  Cheryl then took us to her museum and showed and told us about different things about Abbeville.  Movies have been filmed here including The Louisiana Story.  They also have a huge omelet festival where they make a 5000 egg omelet.  It apparently is done in about 8 places in the world, one being in France.  Because they are on the committee, they were able to go.

There was also a display of beautiful wood art by a local artist.  Very nice.  We then went and packed up, said our goodbyes and went and saw the Abbeville Cathedral.

Very beautiful.  Hit the road on highway 14 toward Lake Charles.  We saw cattle and birds sitting on them just like in Africa.  Also saw what we think were rice fields and more sugar cane.  Saw an example of Cajun ingenuity as our swamp tour guide told us.  There was a man painting the eaves or gutters of a house.and instead of working from a ladder, he had stilts on.  Brilliant.

Cajun ingenuity

We drove to Sam Houston Jones State Park to spend one more night in the swamp.  Beautiful place but lots of fire ants.  The animals are almost tame, including deer, a duck that reminded us of the Aflac duck,  and turtles in the swamp.  There were also lots of raccoons that came out at night. There was a group of young people that I talked to that were from England, Australia and New Zealand that were with some sort of tour,  traveling from New York City to California in 3 weeks.  Finally made a healthy dinner of salad with chicken breast.  Slept poorly due to heat and noise and who know what else.

Got up and walked the loop around the campground and saw 9 deer and a bunny.  Aflac was not around.  Hit the road for Texas, our 14th state of the trip and stopped at the visitor center where we got all sorts of good information for our time in Texas.  We drove toward Galveston and got on a ferry that takes people from Port  to Galveston for free.  Arrived just in time to drive on and take off.

It takes about 10 minutes to get across and then drove into Galveston or Gulf Island , lunch at McDonalds (I was good) and grocery shopping and on to Gulf Island State Park.  The rent has gone up.  Up to $35.00 tonight to be on the beach, or should I say just on the other side of the dunes.  Nice campground with a cement covering over the picnic table which is nice as it is still very hot.  Walked on the beach.  Love the little birds, and pelicans diving into the water.  Felt good to wade in the water and listen to the surf.  I could get used to this.  Just wondering when it will get cool again.  Jack thinks in November.

Dangerous creatures everywhere!
