Our day in Brandon

Thursday, August 30, 2012

Woke up to a southern breakfast of grits, a fried egg, toast and tomatoes.  You eat grits with butter and salt and pepper if you wish.  I thought they were great!  When we came downstairs, our hosts announced that we were not leaving but spending another night.  They simply would not let us leave with the storm the way it was.  We were hoping to go to Vicksburg to the National Battlefield but it was closed today on account of the hurricane.  So kind.  We tried to help a bit by picking up fallen branches in their yard.  We did a load of laundry, went to Walmart and walked as mostly it rained all day.  Cynthia fixed us dinner which included cornbread, potato salad, fried okra (amazingly good), peas (not the green kind).  I think she called them crowder peas but not sure how it is spelled.  She put okra in them to flavor them.  Everything was so delicious and served at 12:30 in the afternoon. Cynthia and Bill are so kind and generous!  I am in serious calorie trouble with all this southern cooking! We viewed their photos from their trip to Alaska.  Lots of bear pics and they got to see many moose. Even after the huge dinner we went to Jerry’s Catfish House where they only serve fresh farm-raised catfish (important that they are fed from the top and not the mud so they have a fresh taste).

Jodi had Catfish, sweet potato,  turnip greens, and hush puppies.  Jack had oysters, French fries, hush puppies and coleslaw.  Oh my.  Went home and watched Mitt Romney’s speech at the Republican convention and then British comedy.
