Hill country and Cajun Festival

Guadalupe River

Walked again this morning.  Worked on the blog and Jack caught up with some paperwork.  We went to Costco and got caught in a terrible traffic jam on the way back so had to take a long detour. We were going to lay low for awhile but then we started investigating some of the things we want to do while we were here and one of the places everyone keeps talking about is Gruen which is actually a small historic town in New Braunfels.  Dean had recommended we drive along the river road by the Guadelupe River and then we found out that The Vineyards in Gruen was having a free wine tasting with appetizers so we decided to head that way.

We drove the river road, where there are all sorts of companies that shuttle tubers, kayakers and placed along the river.  It was very beautiful but all the waterfront is privately owned so no chance to get out and get our feet wet.  Had some great fish tacos in Gruen and walked around the town, shops, and antic stores.  We then went and listened to a 3 piece band and had a glass of nice wine (dry red with 3 types of red grapes and 1 part white which made it a nice summer red) and a pulled pork slider and people watched.  We saw a guy walk in to a tree limb, ouch!

Walked again on the Salado Creek Greenway but this time we walked to the hospital, through the gate and down the trail to the main trail.  We are finally figuring out this city.  Walked about 5 miles and then got ready to take off for the Cajun Festival on Medina Lake about 40 miles west of here.  It is a pretty drive once you get out of town with gently rolling hills, quite green.  Apparently this place has been having this festival for 32 years on the last Saturday in September.  Jodi is so excited!  She finally got to hear some great zydeco music and got to see the dance floors full of couples dancing.  We also heard some Cajun bands, ate gumbo, jambalaya, spicy meat pie and a not so good Lone Star to wash it down.  (Sorry Texas but beer is not your strong suit.)

Oh how I love that zydeco music.  Now if only we could learn to dance to it

Lots of good gumbo to be eaten!
