Woke up to delicious coffee and breakfast of bacon eggs, and Burl’s sourdough bread for toast.  Dean, Jack and I went on a 6.5 mile hike in the woods with occasional views of the Lake.  It is a very pretty trail.  Jack saw a snake.  Their friend Robert is working on extending the trail further.

When we came back we had our lunch on the deck and then Jack and I went swimming in the swimming hole at Charlton.  The water was cold but refreshing.  We stopped at Burl’s and got some  coleslaw, potato salad and ribs for the dinner that we were having with friends Robert and Georgia, an interesting couple who worked at LSU in Alexandria.  He was the chancellor and she a librarian.  Another interesting evening of conversation.  Georgia showed us her rug hooking, with wool strips.  Dean and Kathe gave us some great ideas for travel and ideas for camping in Louisiana and Mississippi and told us all about their wonderful trip to Newfoundland and the Tickle Inn.

We heard a story about Burl. Not sure of the facts, but, apparently, the smokehouse was closed but a man who had grown up in the area was passing through with his family and wanted to have his children meet Burl and eat one of his sandwiches.  The man knocked on the door and Burl answered and agreed to let them in and make sandwiches.  They stayed awhile talking and the man looked at Burl and told him he didn’t look so good.  Burl agreed and told the man how he was feeling.  The man told him he was a heart surgeon and Burl was having a heart attack and needed to get to a hospital immediately.  Burl ended up having heart surgery. Wow!
