J&J Adventures Part 2: Minneapolis

We were busy in Minneapolis after returning from the cabin. We went to the Swedish Institute, a Minnesota Twins baseball game at Target field (thanks Mom and Darrell), dinner at my sister's, a day with my good friend Debbie from PT school, dinner with Mark and Mig ( Mark also from PT school), regular walks around Lake Harriet, a visit to Stillwater, the first settlement in Minnesota on the St.Croix River. We also watched the Olympics every night. I am so happy we were not camping during the Olympics!

Swedish Institute

The American Swedish Institute is an amazing place. There is a very modern building with the gift shop, café and exhibit room and then it is attached to a beautiful mansion that Swedish Immigrant Swan Turnbull had built for his family on Park Avenue at the turn of the century. Other than downtown, Park Avenue was the only paved street in Minneapolis up to 28^th Avenue. His mansion was on 26^th. He was a very successful printer and journalist and published a Swedish language newspaper. He was very successful but not well accepted in Minneapolis as he was an immigrant. He initially wanted to build down by Loring Park but was not given permits to do so. He had incredible wood work in the house, the music room had 26 wood carved cherubs, there was an incredible grand staircase and fireplace with figures from Swedish folklore. There were many tile stoves and different displays of Swedish handknits, bobbin lace and incredible woven artwork by a modern Swedish artist. I think it is time I learn more about my Swedish heritage.

We saw the Minnesota Twins play the Tampa Bay Rays at Target Field. It was the first time any of us had been there. A good time was had by all. Too bad the Twins lost in 10 innings.
